Senja offers something for everyone. With high mountains, extended fjords, pristine white beaches, pebble beaches, open plains, northern lights, midnight sun, and exciting activities, Senja is a year-round destination where you’ll never get bored. In Senja, you can also find a national tourist route, where you can stop at viewpoints to get the best pictures of Norway’s second-largest island. Are you ready?

Norway in Miniature

Senja is equipped with all types of landscapes and is often described as “Norway in miniature”. With great natural experiences for both adults and children, Senja reflects landscapes found throughout Norway. This, of course, means that Senja is a large natural playground (for all ages!). It’s possible to fish, hike, climb, paddle, dive, or cycle around the entire island, and the next adventure is never far away.

You can explore Senja both on land and by sea, and the main industry on the island has been fishing for thousands of years. Therefore, it is possible to go on a fishing trip to one of the world’s richest fishing areas to explore the secrets of the sea. If you prefer fewer waves and a full stomach, the culinary experiences in Senja will impress you. You can indulge in locally sourced seafood regardless of the season!

Never Sad When Out on a Hike

For those who love hiking, there are many exciting summit hikes to embark on. It’s possible to hike on foot in the summer and ski down in the winter. Some summit hikes are easy to undertake, while others require a bit of technical skill and experience in the mountains. All offer spectacular views, and the most famous summit hikes are:

  • Hesten (556 m above sea level): This is a somewhat demanding summit hike, but it is also Senja’s most famous mountain. Prepare for dramatic landscapes and a beautiful view!
  • Husfjellet (632 m above sea level, 3.8 km round trip): From the top of Husfjellet, you get a view of both the sea and the alpine Oskhornan peaks. The hike up is neither long nor steep, but many believe you get the best view in Senja from the top of Husfjellet. Husfjellet is also recognized as one of Queen Sonja’s favorites! The hike is not particularly long or steep, but it scores full points when you stand on the top.
  • Breitinden (1000 m above sea level, 8.8 km round trip): Climb Senja’s highest mountain for an extraordinary experience. This hike is best suited when the weather is fine, so it’s wise to follow the weather map before you set out. Breitinden is outstanding, with jagged mountain ranges and turquoise seas. This is a challenging hike, but well worth it when you reach the top.
  • Sukkertoppen (439 m above sea level, 4.1 km round trip): The sweet Sukkertoppen is a small summit hike that the whole family can join. It’s a small peak just behind Hamn in Senja, where you get a fantastic view of Bergsfjorden and Bergsøyan. The entire hike is well-marked and has a good path, making it manageable for everyone.
  • The Queen’s Route (along the coast, 8 km one way): If you’re tired of climbing mountains, you can choose The Queen’s Route to feel the fresh sea air against your face in a beautiful coastal landscape. The hike is easygoing, and you will walk through flat terrain with patches of small rock outcrops and beaches.

Cycling

To travel around Senja with sustainability in mind (and more muscles in your thighs!) cycling is a great mode of transportation. Since there are many mountains around the island, there are also many tunnels. However, Senja is well adapted for cycling, with a special bicycle-alert button for cycling in tunnels. In other words, you will have a safe experience on the road, and additionally, there is not too much traffic to deal with, especially off-season. With the midnight sun in summer, it is possible to cycle around the clock, which is becoming increasingly popular. Many choose to rent an electric bike, as Senja consists of hilly terrain.

Fishing Villages and Sustainability

Senja is well known for its beautiful fishing villages, whether you want a nice chat with the locals, fresh seafood, accommodations in traditional fishermen’s cabins, or to try your hand at fishing. On the small island of Husøy, you can enjoy delicious seafood and really enjoy lazy days. Siesta is still practiced here, introduced to the inhabitants by Spanish sailors hundreds of years ago. And that’s exactly what you want on vacation – to lower your pulse a bit and really enjoy life.

As we’re already on the topic of taking it easy, it has become more and more popular to travel slower or more sustainably in Senja. Norway’s second-largest island has achieved the Sustainable Destination label. This does not mean that the destination itself is sustainable, but that they are committed to working to reduce the negative impact of tourism while simultaneously strengthening positive effects. It is Innovation Norway that has created the Sustainable Destination label, and it’s smart to also think about how you can help Senja be more sustainable on your vacation. The beautiful island has a fast-growing tourism industry, and that’s precisely why it’s important to preserve its beauty so that many generations can experience the adventure island of Senja.

Experience Hamn in Senja

Hamn in Senja is a popular tourist facility where you can participate in a variety of activities year-round, and experience some out-of-the-ordinary adventures. Hamn is a tourist facility that offers accommodation, wellness, and delicious food. Additionally, you can get a 360-degree view of the midnight sun in summer or the northern lights in winter, as well as fjords and mountains from a wonderful outdoor hot tub. There is also a sauna available, as well as gentle whitewater rafting. It’s a perfect place to swing by or spend several days, and is one of Senja’s most famous spots.

Sami Culture in Senja

Senja has also been home to Sami culture for centuries. Along with the Midt-Troms Museum, Ånderdalen National Park Authority, and the County Governor of Troms, a permanent exhibition called Folk & Nature has been set up in Senja. It conveys natural and cultural history, where Sami culture is well represented. It’s a great experience and journey through Senja’s diverse landscapes of nature and people, as the name suggests.
